Boho Glam Teen Bedroom Makeover

The BEFORE:

My daughter wanted to redesign her room - and it was due.

The before image of her room was cute for a little girl of 8 but now she was 16. She gravitate toward both boho and glam but I wasn’t sure you could make both styles blend well together. I didn’t want to invest a lot of money on the project so that as her tastes changed she could update things easily without feeling financially married to a previous look.

The AFTER:

Her bed went from a twin to a queen and we moved it to the floor on the opposite side of the room. It is now such a cozy sleeping niche — not only for my daughter but for our puppy, too!

The ‘headboard’ was a door that I was using as an architectural element in my basement that I had gotten from a local antique store. The original white paint was peeling so I stripped the paint to reveal the gorgeous wood beneath. So when she wanted her bed on the floor, I already had the perfect headboard in my basement!

The light, side tables and pillows are from Homegoods and the bedding is from Ikea.

The pictures above her bed are my daughters design. She is an excellent calligrapher and she created the ‘dream big’ artwork. We then framed them with simple Ikea frames. The woven textile is a souvenir from her volunteer trip to Peru.

On the other side of the room, we found a vintage sideboard on Facebook Marketplace for $200. Originally we wanted a sleek lucite desk but they are really expensive. The glass and gold desk was a less expensive alternative and still has a similar effect in the room. The drum shade ceiling light and gold wall sconces are also from Wayfair.

The small shadow box frame contains a civil war bullet purchased from a local antique shop and is nod to the Manassas Battlefield that is just 15 minutes from our house.

The painting was something we worked on together. We found some examples of what my daughter liked and painted over a canvas we already had in the house.

In the end, my daughter loves her new room and it fits her (and our favorite furry friend) perfectly!
